My Brother, Jeff

I have a brother, or had. He isn’t alive anymore. We had the same dad, different mothers. He was three years older than me. I’ve seen him only twice in my entire life. Once was at school around 1984. I was only about 12. We lived in the same town and went to the same, rather large, school district. I seen him for just a couple minutes as we happen to be on the same school bus one day. I realized it was him only when he was walking off the bus. The second time I seen him was four years later in 1988 at his funeral.
He had just turned 19. He had just come home from Navy boot camp. He put a gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger. My Dad, who is also now gone, died in 2008, only knew about my brother's death from his obituary in the newspaper. A friend of my Dad had told him about my brother’s obituary. It’s bad enough that your kid dies but then have to learn about if from a fucking newspaper because the mother is so evil that she doesn’t even have the decency to tell Dad? That’s insane!
During my brother’s funeral, my Dad and aunt were able to talk with some of my brother’s friends. They found out that my brother was severely depressed. He was depressed because he could not see our Dad. My Dad did not see my brother very much. It was a few years that Dad seen him before he died. My brother’s mother kept my brother from our Dad. She just would not let Dad have anything to do with my brother. My brother tried finding our Dad but couldn’t.
This was back in the early 80’s when the internet and Facebook did not exist. It was much harder to find someone. This beat the hell out of my Dad. It beat the hell out of my brother, ultimately causing his death. So, really, my brother’s mother killed him and I hope she has suffered for it.
This is not made up. This is all true.

Rest In Peace, Brother
